Matsuo Basho, the 17th century Japanese haiku master and adherent of Zen Buddhism, advised his students not to follow in the footsteps of the wise, but to “seek what they sought.” From its origins in Medieval Japan to its resurgence as a contemporary Japanese and Western form, haiku poets have often sought to develop and record insight into ultimate reality. Haiku provides a way to deepen awareness. This talk and practical writing workshop will explore haiku poetry in relation to meditation and focussed mindfulness. We will consider the traditional conventions of haiku, and then focus on more recent innovations in the form. No prior experience of writing poetry is needed.
